The Advocates for the American Osteopathic Association is a non-profit organization, made up of the spouses/significant others of medical school students. Its goal is to support the public health and educational activities of those physicians through a wide range of programs in the educational, legislative and social arenas.
Today, you will find the men and women of the AAOA educating the community about the outstanding work done by osteopathic physicians. You will also find AAOA volunteers contacting state and federal legislators on behalf of osteopathic professionals and seeking support on issues benefiting the health care consumer.
Through scholarships, AAOA also actively supports students training to become osteopathic physicians and provides social and other support activities for the families of students. The AAOA is also a leader in efforts to curb teen suicide and supports other worthwhile projects with member contributions.
The AAOA traces its roots back to 1929, when Dr. Elizabeth Broach, president of the Osteopathic Women's National Association, conceived the idea of banding together the scattered auxiliaries throughout the country. During the 1939 annual convention of the American Osteopathic Association, the wives of osteopathic physicians met to discuss the benefits of uniting into a national organization. One year later, the board of trustees of AOA approved the affiliation of the AAOA as an allied organization.
