The AAOA announces the new Intern & Resident Advocates Association, a special interest group for Advocate members supporting an intern or resident.  Intern/Resident Liaison Tiffany Sweeney shares more...

Are you an advocate to a current intern or resident? Are you an advocate to one that may be up and coming in the next year? If so, I have got some amazing news for you!! On Tuesday, November 3, 2009, in New Orleans, it was voted to pass the new appointed position of Intern/Resident Liaison to the AAOA Board of Directors. With the passing of this new bylaw change, a new group has been born . . . The Intern & Resident Advocates Association (IRAA)!!!

What does this mean for you? To put it simply . . . more support specifically directed to those of us in the residency years, a way to begin sharing our voice, expressing our concerns, and getting those many questions answered that are unique to our situations! How are we going to do this? Well, you can look forward to these benefits that are already in place or in the works . . . .

  • Facebook Group: A new Facebook group has been established to help all the Intern & Resident Advocates to connect across the country! Discussions have already begun and announcements are being made. It will be a great way to stay up-to-date and in the loop on a regular basis. You can search for Intern & Resident Advocate Association and join our conversation today!
  • Monthly Check-Ins: Every month, the IRAA will be sharing information and updates in the AAOA newsletter. Click here to subscribe.
  • Tri-annual Newsletters: That’s right! When you sign up for the monthly newsletters using the process above, you have the option to receive specific correspondence for IRAA. This correspondence will include a tri-annual newsletter for our first year, including special topics that we face now or will be in the future. Our first newsletter is set to publish in January!!

Now that I have explained the IRAA, I would like to end with a brief introduction of myself, the first Intern/Resident Liaison for the AAOA. My name is Tiffany and I am married to Craig, an Anesthesiology Intern at Saint Louis University. Ironically, I also work with a large population of pre-med students as an Academic Advisor within the same institution. Between our busy work schedules and the entertainment of our two gorgeous children, we rarely have a dull moment around our house! With all that is happening, at home and with the AAOA, it is going to be a VERY exciting year!!

At this time, I would like to encourage each of you to take a few minutes to do a couple of things for me . . . (1) Forward this newsletter on to all your fellow advocates! We want to make sure that everyone is joining in the conversation and not missing this great resource! AND (2) Send me a quick email with questions, comments, suggestions, etc. that you may have or would like to see addressed in the upcoming newsletters. This is your chance to contribute and voice your opinion!!

I look forward to serving and working with you this year!!

With Warmest Regards,

Tiffany Sweeney
